  • Clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye
  • A gradual process that can eventually impair vision

Could be dangerous, if the answer is YES for any one of the following questions

Causes of Cataract

  • Common in older adults.
  • Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (such as from sunlight)
  • Eye injuries
  • Diabetes, especially when blood sugar is poorly controlled
  • Radiation treatment to the head
  • Some babies are born with cataracts (congenital cataracts) or develop them shortly after birth
  • Hereditary factors

Do’s and Don’ts of Cataract

  • Avoid long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses that filter out UVB rays from a young age
  • If above 60 have an eye examination at least once a year
  • Women considering pregnancy should be immunized to prevent baby from developing cataracts due to German measles (rubella) virus

  • Hazy vision, double or blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light and glare
  • Impaired vision at night
  • Colors look less bright
  • Need for frequent changes in eyeglass prescriptions

  • Surgery is safe, fast, and almost painless
  • Surgery involves replacing the clouded lens with an implanted clear plastic, acrylic or silicone intraocular lens (IOL)
  • IOLs remain permanently in place, require no maintenance or handling, and are neither felt by the recipient nor noticed by others

  • Limit your night driving
  • Improve the lighting in your home with more or brighter lamps
  • Use a magnifying glass to read

Investigations for Cataract

  • Medical history and eye examination
  • Infants are checked for cataracts at birth and during routine visits to a health professional
  • Parents may detect cataracts in an infant by noticing lens clouding, or poor vision in their child
