We Have to Know about the Diabetes in Pregnancy

  • Diabetes may manifest itself for the first time in pregnancy or much more commonly, an already diabetic woman may become pregnant.
  • Diabetes is a disease of later life which may account for the low incidence of the complication in Pregnancy

Causes of Diabetes in Pregnancy

  • Clinical Diabetes – Patients with an abnormal response to Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT) and with symptoms and complications of diabetes
  • Asymptomatic Diabetes (Subclinical, chemical) – Patients with a diabetic response to the GTT but without clinical signs and symptoms
  • Gestational Diabetes (Latent Diabetes) – Persons in whom the GTT is normal under ordinary conditions but who give an abnormal response under stress, during pregnancy

Effect of Diabetes on Pregnancy:-

  • Abortion
  • Preeclampsia 2-4 times increased
  • Congenital Foetal anomalies
  • Premature births
  • Higher incidence of urinary tract infection
  • Vulvovaginitis
  • Postpartum Hemorrhage

Effect on Foetus:-

  • Congenital anomalies
  • Overweight infants
  • Intrauterine growth retardation
  • Birth trauma due to the large size of the foetus
  • The infant is oversized, edematous bloated due to excessive fat deposition
  • Neonatal deaths are common. Commonly delivered by cesarean section
  • Increased incidence of respiratory distress syndrome
  • Increase malformation of Foetus

Treatment for Diabetes in Pregnancy

  • Regular antenatal check up
  • Hospital Delivery

Investigations for Diabetes in Pregnancy

  • Fasting blood sugar
  • Post lunch sugar
  • Blood grouping and Rh grouping
  • Complete urine examination
  • Scanning
