We Have to Know about the Vaginitis

  • Inflammation of the vagina.
  • When the natural balance of a healthy vagina is disrupted, one or more types of organism normally present in the vagina multiply.
  • Common vaginal infections are vulvovaginal candidiasis, bacterial vaginosis, and trichomoniasis

Causes of Vaginitis

  • Vulvovaginal candidiasis- caused by a yeast-like fungus, spreads by sexual contact, commonly occurs during pregnancy.
  • Bacterial vaginosis- occurs due to the rapid growth of several kinds of bacteria that naturally live in the vagina. Off-white, grey vaginal discharge of a “fishy” odor is present
  • Trichomoniasis- It is an STD caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis, which is not part of the normal vaginal flora. Causes yellow-green or grey, thin, foamy and foul-smelling vaginal discharge.

Do’s and Don’ts of Vaginitis

  • A condom should be used during sexual intercourse until treatment is complete

Signs & Symptoms of Vaginitis

  • Abnormal vaginal discharge, unpleasant odor
  • Vaginal and vulval discomfort, burning and itching
  • Genital swelling
  • Change in vaginal color from pale pink to red
  • Discomfort during sexual intercourse
  • Frequent or painful urination

Medical advice for Vaginitis

  • If symptoms persist for more than 1 week

Risk factors of Vaginitis

  • Yellow or green vaginal discharge
  • Symptoms persist longer than a week or worsen or recur despite treatment
  • More than three yeast infections occur in a year
  • Unusual vaginal bleeding or swelling develops
  • You are pregnant
  • You have been exposed to an STD

Treatment for Vaginitis

  • Vaginal tablets
  • Oral medicines for some cases

Self-care for Vaginitis

  • Wipe from front to back after using the toilet
  • Eat curds
  • Wear cotton panties
